Dr Sukla Chaterjee analyses Rohinton Mistry’s novel A Fine Balance (1996) through the lens of emotions, focusing on the depiction of social and political dimensions of postcolonial emotions. By examining the prevailing ‘structures of feeling’ within postcolonial society and the experiences of the subaltern, the discussion raises (and hopefully responds) to the question, ‘Can the subaltern feel?’
