The old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born—now is the time of monsters,” the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci wrote from a fascist prison cell in 1930.
The liberal capitalist order that has dominated the world for decades is breaking down. And its disintegration produces violence, chaos and political polarisation.
Alongside the monsters of Donald Trump and Nigel Farage, there are glimpses of an alternative. But how can our side win?
That was the central question taken up by Gramsci in the 1920s and 1930s. He systematically developed the lessons of Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks who had given leadership to a successful working class revolution in Russia in 1917.
He applied them to address the immediate problem, the failure of the revolutionary upsurge which had swept western Europe in the wake of the 1917 Russian Revolution.
Join us to discuss Gramsci and the legacy of his ideas in action today.
